Inspired by the energtic sounds of elementary school recess, a bouncing ball sets off sound that is received by a wire model of the bones of the inner ear. Sound waves emanate to cause vibrations on the surface of a pool of water, from which glass fish swim. For me, this is a depiction of the ways we experience energies, how we perceive the world, and how these experiences generate ideas within us. However, Genesee Hill’s second grade class will tell you, ‘It’s a whale portal."

Root and Wing

The maturation cycle of an imaginary life form takes place within the architecture of the common area of the science lab building. Secure in its colony, a seed sends out a root from within its protective shell. It hatches into a jellyfish-like entity with sensate tentacles, developing an embryonic form within its colorful glass pod. This stage of life is spent floating, alone. The embryo separates and is rooted once more with its kind. Yet this time it has eyes and becomes aware of itself and its surroundings. Roots shrink away as wings develop, as the creatures become aware of each other and gather together to take flight.

Our lives are intertwined with technology whose mechanisms we barely understand. Likewise, we exist in bodies whose inner workings are a mystery. Urgent Messages draws a parallel of that separation between what we can experience directly, and what is happening continuously yet beyond our grasp.
